Easy DIY Eras Tour Costume | Taylor Swift’s Midnights Dress

Before I relaunched my website, my most read piece was a ‘DIY Minion Halloween Costume’ post from around 2014. Therefore it only feels fitting that I also share how I created my Taylor Swift costume for the Eras Tour.

The inspiration for this was Taylor’s Moschino playsuit and faux fur from the VMAs afterparty back in 2022. Aka the Midnights era. I really wanted to wear something I could make myself, but without the commitment of 100s of hours or too many materials.

What you need-

A navy satin like dress or playsuit

A white fluffy or faux fur jacket

Glue gun

Clear Glue sticks

Rhinestones (I chose a bigger size)

Star patches (these already came with the rhinestones on them)

*tweezers are pictured but I actually didn’t use them! Found it easier to pick up the gems myself*

I actually found both clothing pieces on Vinted, the dress was originally the ‘Upgrade You’ dress from Oh Polly which I managed to buy for £6. The white faux fur was originally from EGO, however I snatched it up new with tags for just £3. Talk about bargains.

The process is simple. Glue the rhinestones along the top of the dress and the straps. The original outfit takes them all around, but I just kept them on the front. If you have adjustable straps, it’s a good idea to fit them to you before you start gluing, as you may not be able to after. 

Now, the stars. I tried to follow the original as best I could, but as long as they’re going across diagonally, you’ll appear very accurate. I actually found it harder to glue the stars than the individual rhinestones. I ended up using the glue gun to pop a drop of glue in the centre and then an old eyeliner brush to spread it out into the points.

And that my friends, is literally it. In total this took me less than an hour. I did end up going back and peeling off any rhinestones that had a little give, just to stick them back firmer. But if you glue them properly in the first place, this isn’t something to worry about. At the actual concert I only dropped two rhinestones, despite my worry of leaving a sparkly trail wherever I go.

However, don’t feel like you need to stick to the original design! This is a wonderful opportunity for you to add your own twist to the outfit. For example, through a long jumpsuit instead of a dress of going for a red and black Reputation theme instead of the navy and silver.
