I went to the Hourglass masterclass at Harvey Nichols – here are my thoughts.
The tickets were £10. This included the session, £10 off an Hourglass product, a goodie bag (containing a mini Hourglass lipstick and an ABH eye primer), a glass of pop and a voucher to get your makeup done worth £65. So on the value for money front, this was absolutely a yes.
The ladies there were lovely, and the energy was wonderful. We were greeted with a glass of prosecco (or juice) and invited over to the seats where our goody bags were waiting for us. The Hourglass team was great, we were encouraged to ask questions and touch the products throughout. At the end, we had a short Q&A session followed by playing around with the products at the counter to get colour matched.
But I think the thing I actually enjoy most about these events is that they are a little escape from reality. You can step into a makeup world and completely immerse yourself for an hour and a half. It’s wonderful. This is also absolutely something you can do either alone or with your friends/family. It would be a brilliant introduction to solo activities, and in fact, was one of my first solo adventures many moons ago! You will not be sticking out if you’re there on your own and no one would question it, I promise.
These masterclasses are a pretty brilliant concept. Great marketing for the company, a way to establish a client base and everyone thinks they got the better half of the bargain. These also differ from the standard counter interactions, because no one is in a rush and even though the staff hope you will leave with a big shopping bag, they’re not rushing you over to the till. This means you can learn in depth about the products, which of their products work best together and what’s best for you. This is a space where you are encouraged to ask questions and you actually learn quite a lot.
These types of events are fairly common. The manager at Harvey Nichols said they aim for one of these masterclasses a week, so there’s plenty of time for you to experience this too. If HN isn’t for you, John Lewis and individual makeup stores also tend to host master classes dotted around the country.
Overall, I think the Hourglass Masterclass is 100% worth both your time and money. It’s fun, educational and a little beauty escape from reality.
If you’re wanting more information about these sessions, I have an in depth review of my experience at a Charlotte Tilbury masterclass, which you can read here.
