Solo In The City: The Daring, The Thrilling and The Fun of NYC

I see how this can seem unprecedented. A young foreign woman going to New York City by herself? Mad? Madly fun.

I have travelled to various different places of our beautiful planet by myself, including many busy cities such as London, Paris and Rome. Whilst not having a negative experience at the others, I must say that I actually felt the safest in NYC. The large crowds were only an intimidating theory, in reality I think they were the reason I felt a bit more secure. The fact that even in the early hours of the morning the place was full of life added so much spirit. Since hostels are on the pricier side in New York, I decided to stay in a hotel (wild for a girl who usually travels just with a handbag, I know). I stayed in Four Points by Sheraton in Midtown Manhattan and I have no complaints. The location was the most important factor for me, and it was a short walk from both the bus terminal and Times Square. Easy.

I had give or take 24 hours in NYC before my coach back to Boston. Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment was what I wanted to see most and despite the crowd of other phone in hand pose ready girls queuing before me, it was so worth it. I found a flea market through a quick google search in the morning and felt like Manhattan cool girl on her way back from Soul Cycle. There were plenty of PR events around and it really lived up to the expectation. But the absolute highlight was going to the Met. Wow. Walking up those stairs feeling like I’m in Ocean’s 8 was a feeling I will never forget. All the exhibitions were so rich in culture. This is undoubtedly my favourite museum I have ever visited.

I never understood this concept that you shouldn’t do things alone. Like when people think that going to a restaurant by yourself is odd, it baffles me. Ultimately, you’re just going to eat and a restaurant provides food, so why do we add all this stigma on ourselves for no reason? It’s the same with travel. I remember when I started exploring places alone, many people around me thought it was pretty brave. Whilst I appreciate the compliment, I genuinely don’t see how that is. Anyone can do it. It’s a lot of fun to break away from reality for a split second.

If you’re debating whether or not to take the plunge, I highly recommend you to go. I think that the saturation of the city may actually help for a first time alone trip because since there is so much going on, you’ll be completely preoccupied.

Should you get the chance to, I highly recommend, especially if you’re on a summer camp journey.  And if you’re nervous about heading out alone, I hope I calmed your nerves at least a little bit.
